The Center for Abnormal Placentation at Hackensack University Medical Center’s Department of Maternal-Fetal Medicine & Surgery is the first program in the world created specifically for women with abnormal placental development. Our MFM experts have treated more than 300 cases and achieved exceptional neonatal and maternal outcomes, including:

- The lowest rate of blood transfusion in the country in a MFM program

Our Center for Abnormal Placentation has served as a model for similar programs across the globe. We specialize in the diagnosis and medical/surgical management of conditions that affect the placenta, including placenta accreta, placental abruption and placenta previa. Our patients also benefit from groundbreaking research conducted by our Obstetric Research Division and can access leading-edge treatments for placental abnormalities.

In addition to being among the most experienced in the world in caring for women with abnormal placental development, Hackensack University Medical Center’s MFM specialists also offer a full range of additional services:
- Fetal Care Program. Our Fetal Care Program offers comprehensive care for fetuses with congenital conditions or other problems that can complicate birth.
- Perinatal Diagnostic Unit. Our Perinatal Diagnostic Unit offers advanced obstetric imaging and screening procedures, including chorionic villus sampling (CVS), amniocentesis, biochemical and ultrasound screening tests, percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS), biophysical profile, Doppler velocimetry and fetal echocardiography.
- Center for Early Pregnancy Loss. At our Center for Early Pregnancy Loss, we evaluate women who have experienced a pregnancy loss between 12 and 20 weeks, specializing in those who have had multiple miscarriages.
- Bloodless Medicine Program. Hackensack University Medical Center has special expertise in caring for patients with religious or personal objections to blood transfusion. We use cell salvage techniques and other approaches to reduce blood loss while respecting patient preferences.
